Everyone in Stinky Cove hates the eagle. Piper hated him first.

He is the one who came down on a seal pup last winter and dropped him on the rocks, and ten-year-old Piper stood on the beach and vowed to hate him forever, with the whole town cheering. Then she finds his nest in a dying pine above the power line, and watches the villain of Stinky Cove feed his chick, alone, with nobody to trade shifts with.

For eleven weeks she keeps a secret notebook, learns his true call, and asks the question nobody wants asked: what if he had a reason? Then a saw crew comes for the tree, the secret comes out, and the town has to decide what it owes a bird it spent a year wishing gone.
