The Chronicles of Stinky Cove · Book 9
Neap
The Seal Who Stayed
Leni has been sent. A kid who has been sent does not believe in things that stay.
She is nine, and she arrives in Halftide in January with a bag she does not unzip, to an aunt who is neither warm nor cold, her third house since the summer before last. She does not believe in the white rock, or the boards on the clubhouse wall, or a town that names its winters after whatever happened in them.
That same month a gray seal comes up onto the near shore of Stinky Cove and has her pup on the cobble, which has not happened in the memory of anybody alive. A seal on a beach is a thing a town wants to help. The only help there is: a line of orange twine, a sawhorse across the lane, and a quarter mile of nothing happening, on purpose, until the ice goes.
Somebody has to stand at the rope from half past three till dark. Piper hands Leni the clipboard.
The oldest board on that wall was painted fifteen years ago by a girl who never came back. This is the last book. The cove remembers.
